Defensive Specialist
A sub who comes in to pass and defend like a libero, but you track her through regular substitution windows. She wears the same color as the team, burns entries off your 15 (or whatever cap your federation uses in high school or club), and can still hit or serve in every rotation, unlike a FIVB libero who is blocked from the service zone. Coaches use DS’s when the roster is deep in servers but still needs a stronger passer for three back-row turns.
Example
The MB rotates back; the staff slides the DS in for the side-out, runs three good passes, then flips the MB back in when she is front again.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a libero and a defensive specialist?
The libero is the free sub in the different jersey with FIVB limits on block, attack, and (internationally) serve. A DS is just another player: she costs you a sub, and she can serve, swing, and set overhead in front row, but you lose the free defensive swap.
