Joust

A shared ball above the tape where you and a blocker or attacker both have legal hands, and the stronger press wins the micro battle. FIVB still lets you joust, but the moment you shove the net to get an edge, you are in net fault territory, so the skill is all about hand strength and who gets on top of the ball first.

Example

A tight one pops off the net; the setter and MB meet above the white band. The middle’s fingers win the stack; the ball dies on the setter’s side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a joust in volleyball?

It is a tie-ball you fight for over the net. You get the next three contacts if you shove the ball to their floor or they mishandle the rebound. In beach doubles you see the same thing with both players up at the tape.
