Down Ball

A standing or off-one-foot send when the set never lets the hitter get airborne for a true terminal swing, usually from a broken pass. There is still pace, so it is not a free ball, but the block is rarely up because the hitter is not a jump threat. Your back row yells “down” to tell pins to peel and hands to get deep.

Example

A bad first touch floats the pass wide; the pin stands on two feet, rolls a heavy ball over, and the defense takes it in zone 5 with a simple platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a down ball and a free ball?

A free ball is a true gift: high arch, no teeth. A down ball still has swing speed; you are just on the ground. Block stays home off the net, defenders stay a step deeper for the down speed.
