Side-Out
You take the other team’s serve, win the rally, get the point, and the ball. In the old system you only got serve; in rally you get both, but coaches still call the pass-kill side-out. Track side-out percentage: above .600 on receive in DI usually means you are in the match late.

Tough pass, out-of-system out, the pin tools, R2 gives you the ball. Side-out, point, and you rotate to serve on the next dead ball if you are next up.

What does side-out mean in volleyball?
It means the receiving team stopped the other server and earned the right to be the next server after the current rotation, plus a point. Analytics folks still use “side-out rate” the same way even though the score is rally.
